That’s why it’s a good idea to always use the “do not disturb” sign in the hotel

While most hotel stays are hassle-free, there are a few precautions you should take when you leave your room. Let’s listen to the exclusive advice of a security expert!

Brian Moore is a former Director General of UK Border Patrol and Director of Global Secure Accreditation. He revealed the steps he recommends everyone take when checking into a hotel anywhere in the world.

“Make sure the room doors have automatic closing mechanisms and double locks. Although the risk of a hotel door malfunctioning is quite low, we do check the locks on arrival, check that the door closes completely when we leave the room, and alert the staff immediately if there are any problems with this.”

Brian Moore recommends taking door wedges with you on vacation or asking hotel staff for one for added security. The wedge can be used to ‘clamp’ the door to provide additional protection when inside.

“Never say our room number out loud. Otherwise, someone could try to get a key by pretending to know you. Let’s use our last name instead. Politely but firmly call the staff aside if there are more than one of us in the same room and then give us our name and room number,” advises Moore.

Of course, it’s best to keep it a secret, as it prevents anyone from following you or trying to enter the room. It is true that the hotel staff cannot let anyone into the room without the guest’s permission, but public mention of our name must be avoided.

As for valuables, Brian Moore recommends keeping the most important things in the hotel safe. “Also bring a suitcase lock in case the room safe is broken into, or a thicker bike lock to chain the bag to the bed or other heavy object.”

One of the best tips is related to the do not disturb sign,

which should be placed on the door of the room every time you leave, creating the illusion that you are inside. Hotel staff will not enter if they see it posted and opportunistic thieves may be deterred.

According to Brian Moore, it’s best to avoid making transactions, saving passwords, or opening secure information when connected to hotel Wi-Fi. Make sure that you are really connected to the hotel’s network and not to a fake one with a similar name.

Hotel networks are easy to hack, so it’s best to avoid sensitive interactions. Fraudsters can also copy the name of the hotel’s wifi to trick guests, so be sure to log in to the correct network.

Not everyone feels safe in a hotel. For example, many people fear that an intruder might sneak into the room and then hide in the closet or under the bed. A flight attendant revealed the best “hotel hacks” that can increase our sense of security.
