“Snowdrop – The Star Wars Project”: This is the working title for Ubisoft’s upcoming “Star Wars” game. Are you looking forward to it? We also! And that’s exactly why we present our wishes for the open world game.
George Lucas’ star saga “Star Wars” will remain a dominant theme in 2023: “Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Enhanced Edition” was recently released to launch the PlayStation VR2. On April 28th, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the long-awaited sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. And in the future, too, titles like Quantic Dreams “Star Wars: Eclipse” will take us back to galaxies far, far away.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft is also forging on a space adventure called “Snowdrop – The Star Wars Project”. The open-world game is in the works at Masse Entertainment, developers of Tom Clancy’s The Division. There is no release date yet, but 2024 or even 2025 are very likely. You won’t find any concrete information at the moment and that’s why it’s a good time to put your own wishes for Ubisoft’s “Star Wars” game on paper.
Which age should it be?
The Star Wars universe is constructed from a variety of eras, from the Old Republic to the Legacy Era. The most recent Hollywood trilogy, for example (like “The Mandalorian”), takes place during the new republic, while the classic one takes place during the rule of the empire and the prequel series takes place at the fall of the Jedi and with it the rise of the empire. At this point we don’t want to bore you too much with the “Star Wars” calendar.
However, there are more than enough options to find a suitable time frame for a new Star Wars game. Above all, however, the scenario gives the creators a lot of creative freedom and opportunities: If you choose a time when the films take place, for example, you certainly have the highest recognition value, but you also have to live up to it. We all remember the acceptance problems that license versions like “Marvel’s The Avengers” or the much better “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” brought with them.
It seems wiser to choose an age that is not so shaped and thus pre-loaded. After Respawn’s “Star Wars Jedi – Fallen Order” takes place a few years after “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”, its sequel follows and takes place at a similar time as the Disney + series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, this time frame seems to have been grazed to be. With “Andor”, on the other hand, the beginnings of the rebellion were recently shown.
So while there is a lot of reveling in the “past” here, we would like Ubisoft’s “Star Wars” game to have a more modern setting in the times of the new Jedi order. Especially the time after the latest trilogy could be interesting here and has some exciting highlights with events like the Second Galactic Civil War or the Sith-Imperial War. It is also unclear to what extent the makers will rely on time jumps and thus skip smaller gaps in the plot.
In a galaxy far, far away
But it doesn’t matter which era Ubisoft’s “Star Wars” adventure is set in, it has to convey the feeling of the original and that includes the right vehicles as well as the characters. As is well known, Massive Entertainment is working on an open-world game and according to rumors it should be possible – similar to “No Man’s Sky” – to travel from one planet to the next without major loading breaks or interruptions.
This is how you capture the mood of the films and series. “Star Wars” has always conveyed the feeling of a great journey – frequent changes of location are therefore mandatory. So why not put “all” power directly into the hands of the players in a non-linear game?
Of course, we also want the widest possible fleet, space battles and everything that goes with it. The machines from “Star Wars” are iconic and accordingly we not only want to experience them passively, but ideally also control them ourselves. Who knows, maybe Massive Entertainment will even integrate customization options. The potential for that is always there!
who do you want to be
Bounty hunter, smuggler, rebel or even Jedi master: There are countless interesting roles in the Star Wars universe that would be worth taking on. As has already been leaked, Ubisoft’s Star Wars adventure will feature an open world and likely free-form characters that you can shape with your choices in a non-linear mission construct.
In this way, everyone could experience their own personal journey through the universe and shape their own character as it suits them. Massive Entertainment already gained a lot of experience with the design of soldier classes and endgame specializations in “The Division”. Such role-playing influences could keep motivation high in the long term.
Shall the force be with you?
The forces of the Force are an overarching theme in the Star Wars story. But no matter whether dark or light side: only a select few are able to use these abilities after years of training.
The question for Ubisoft’s open-world game is therefore: will the character controlled by the player automatically have the power and possibly learn it? Or are these skills even linked to the character and its class or specialization – if there is such a feature.

But let’s be honest: We don’t need yet another main character who absolutely has to be able to wield the Force. After all, that’s exactly what we’re not getting until April 28, 2023 with Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. We therefore wish that there was an optional Force story path in which we can choose to join the dark or the light side, or that the Force comes into play primarily through secondary characters and antagonists this time.
Now it’s your turn: What features do you want for Ubisoft’s “Star Wars” game and to what extent do you agree with our ideas? Write your opinion in the comments and discuss it in the community.
