That's how strict the dress code on the New York Stock Exchange is
The rules are not wishlists. A violation is punished with a fine.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the cathedral of the world economy. Accordingly, they are strict Rules for the external appearance. Hawaiian shirts or shaggy beards have no place on the New York trading floor. The dress code doesn’t just apply to brokers. NYSE members must educate guests about the dress code prior to visiting. The rules are not wishlists. Violation will result in a fine of 250 US dollars, the equivalent of 224 euros. Repeat offenders have to shell out $ 500 the second time.

“All items of clothing must be ironed halfway and not be creased”, clarifies the NYSE in its code of conduct. Then the exchange goes into detail.

Male employees:

  • Dress shirt, collar buttoned
  • Tie, tightly tied
  • long trousers: suit trousers or casual trousers – jeans or sports trousers are not allowed
  • Long-sleeved jacket (suit, jacket, blazer or plain office jacket)

The dress code “Business Casual” applies to male guests:

  • Suit, jacket or jacket
  • Tie is optional
  • Dress shirt, golf / polo shirt with collar or turtleneck top

T-shirts or other casual tops as well as jeans and shorts are prohibited. Men must always wear socks. Full beards, mustaches and sideburns must be neatly trimmed. The stock market also requires well-groomed hairstyles.

Female employees:

  • “Appropriate” blouses, tops, shirts or sweaters – no informal clothing
  • Skirt or dress in an appropriate business length
  • long suit pants – jeans or shorts are prohibited

In the case of women, no distinction is made between employees and guests. The wearer can decide whether socks or tights are necessary for her outfit.

The same rules apply to both sexes when it comes to shoes. Health comes first here. Shoes with a comfortable heel height that are “safe” to wear are desired. They should fit the professional environment. Black sneakers are allowed. Flip-flops, casual boat shoes or “other extreme styles” are prohibited. Apparently, in the past, many a stock market trader shed their shoes at the end of a busy day. The stock exchange feels compelled to point out: “Shoes must always be worn on the floor.” The regulations apply both in midsummer and in bitter cold. The exchange can temporarily change the dress code.
