Berlin (dpa) – Relegated, promoted, Champions League place: The Bundesliga and the 2nd division promise excitement again at the end of the season. An important decision is also made at the European Football Union.
Who else gets off?
The final questions in the relegation battle will be decided between Hertha BSC, VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld on the last day of the game. Bielefeld has the worst cards. The East Westphalia are 17th, three points behind the relegation place and need a goal festival against RB Leipzig.
On the other hand, a draw at Borussia Dortmund is enough for Hertha BSC to play in the Bundesliga next season. The Stuttgarters on the relegation place save themselves if they win against 1. FC Köln and the Berliners lose in Dortmund.
Who else is going up?
The final in league two is tingling: Schalke is back in the top flight, and three teams are eligible for the second direct promotion spot. The same three could also end up on the relegation place. Werder has the best chance. If Bremen (60 points) get at least one point against Jahn Regensburg on Sunday, they’re through.
If Hamburger SV (57) also wins at Hansa Rostock, it will surely have the relegation place due to the best goal difference. Then there would only be fourth place for SV Darmstadt (57) with the same number of points. But if HSV draws, Darmstadt could overtake Hamburg with a win against SC Paderborn. And what if, contrary to expectations, Bremen loses? Then HSV or Darmstadt could rise directly with victories. If both win, HSV is second, Darmstadt third and Werder would have to drop to fourth place.
Who plays where in Europe?
Champions Munich, Dortmund and Leverkusen will play in the Champions League next season. But who secures fourth place on the grid? Leipzig or Freiburg? The Saxons go into the season finale in fourth place (57) with a two-point lead over Freiburg, where Freiburg have to play in Leverkusen and Leipzig in Bielefeld.
1. FC Union Berlin (6th place/54 points) will have to decide which European Cup to play against Bochum next Saturday. With a win, the seventh Cologne (52 points) would be distanced as the last rival for a Europa League place. If things go badly, it goes into the Conference League, which Cologne certainly has. If Cologne wins accordingly high in Stuttgart and Union only plays a draw against Bochum, FC would start in the Europa League.
UEFA session
The UEFA executive decides on Tuesday in Vienna where the final of the European Football Championship 2024 will be held in Germany. The favorite is Berlin, where the final of the 2006 World Cup was also played. Munich, as another possible candidate, had already received group games at the Europe-wide EM 2021. Other topics at the two-day meeting are Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the European Cup reform from 2024.
Women’s Bundesliga
After VfL Wolfsburg has already won the title and FC Bayern Munich is another Champions League participant, the final decisions will be made in the upper house for the season finale on Sunday (2 p.m.). In the race for third place in the premier class, Eintracht Frankfurt has the best chances on paper.
The fourth in the table has 43 points, as does the third Turbine Potsdam, but with Werder Bremen they are probably the easier opponents. Potsdam has to go to runner-up Bayern. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (40) only has theoretical chances. They are also looking for the second relegated team alongside FC Carl Zeiss Jena, with SC Sand from Baden having the worst cards.
