The American actor Danny Masterson (44), known for the hit series That ‘70s show, has denied allegations in court that he raped three women.

Masterson was arrested in mid-June, but released after paying $ 3.3 million in bail ($ 2.8 million). On Friday he appeared for the first time in court. If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in prison.
The Hollywood actor is said to have assaulted the three women, all three in their twenties, between 2001 and 2003. He denies that. His lawyer claims the charges are politically inspired. Masterson would be targeted for his high profile membership in the Church of Scientology.

The attorney accused Los Angeles County district attorney Jackie Lacey of filing the charges for political gain. Lacey would like to keep her post after the presidential election in November.
“There have been repeated attempts to politicize this case,” said the attorney, who has also defended Michael Jackson against allegations of sexual misconduct. “He’s absolutely not guilty and we’re going to prove it.”
Lacey has not yet commented, but a colleague dismisses the allegations as “false” and “pure speculation with no factual basis”.
