Thanks to the exceptional endowment provided by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Government’s recovery plan, the CMN will initiate in 2021 major restoration projects throughout the national territory.

As part of the recovery plan, the Center des monuments nationaux (CMN) will benefit from an exceptional allocation of 40 million euros to support heritage and promote craftsmanship and excellent know-how through the restoration of historical monuments which have been entrusted to it for management by the State. Fourteen monuments from the CMN network will therefore be affected from 2021.

The CMN, a public establishment placed under the supervision of the Minister of Culture and the leading French tourist and cultural operator, ensures the conservation, restoration and opening to the public of around a hundred monuments, such as the Arc de triomphe, la Sainte -Chapelle, the castle of Azay-le-Rideau, the ramparts of Carcassonne or the villa Cavrois. Each year, the CMN undertakes major restoration and development work there, thanks to the annual investment subsidy paid by the Ministry of Culture.

The exceptional allocation resulting from the recovery plan will make it possible from 2021 to:

  • The restoration of the northern ramparts of the castle of Angers – Maine-et-Loire (6.5 M € / from April 2021 to December 2022);
  • Restoration of the facades of the Tau Palace in Reims, as part of a program for the complete restoration of the building and the development of a new visitor trail – Marne (€ 2.5 million / end 2021 to end 2022) ;
  • The completion of the restoration of the facades and roofs of the “Merveille” of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, initiated thanks to a first grant from the ministry – Manche (1 M € / from 1is quarter 2021 to December 2022);
  • The restoration of the last part of the rampart walkway of the city of Carcassonne, allowing the public to take a full tour of the ramparts circuit – Aude (4.5 M € / from May 2021);
  • The fitting out, before the 2024 Olympic Games, of a new pontoon, new reception areas and a restaurant at the Château d’If – Bouches-du-Rhône (€ 6 million / in 2022);
  • The restoration of the Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue and the fitting-out of a museum exhibiting the important collection of paintings by the Brache-Bonnefoi – Tarn-et-Garonne (3 M € / from January 2021 to April 2022) ;
  • The restoration of the counterscarp of the castle of Villeneuve-Lembron – Puy-de-Dôme (2.2 M € / from September 2021 to November 2022);
  • The restoration, with a view to its opening to the public, of the north terrace of the Château de Cadillac – Gironde (3 M € / from May 2021 to summer 2022);
  • The restoration of the framework, the roof and the chimney stumps of the castle of Montal – Lot (2.9 M € / from May 2021 to December 2022);
  • The restoration of the “governor’s house” and the development of reception areas and an introductory tour for the towers and ramparts of Aigues-Mortes – Gard (€ 1 million / from September 2021 to September 2022);
  • The completion of the restoration of the Rochambeau barracks in the stronghold of Mont-Dauphin – Hautes-Alpes (€ 3.6 million from September 2021 until the start of 2023);
  • Completion of the restoration of the Sarcus wing of the Château de Bussy-Rabutin – Côte-d’Or (€ 1 million / until the end of 2021);
  • The restoration of the facades and roofs of the Preuses wing, the Alexandre tower and the Godefroi de Bouillon tower at the Château de Pierrefonds – Oise (€ 2 million / until the end of 2023);
  • The restoration of the Bishop’s room at the Château de Carrouges – Orne (€ 1 million / from 2021 to 2022)

As for the castle of Villers-Cotterêts, it benefits under the recovery plan from an additional specific envelope of 100 million euros (which is in addition to the 85 million already planned), intended for the creation, in the restored castle. , of the International City of the French Language.

The CMN is also continuing the projects already underway, in particular the restoration of the July Column of the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris, the restoration of the king’s pavilion at the Château d’Oiron, or the development of the archaeological site museum. of Ensérune. The restoration operations planned for 2021 as part of the establishment’s investment program, such as the restoration of the roof of the chapel of the Château d’Aulteribe, or the restoration of the Château de Vincennes (restoration of the chatelet, the barbican east, drawbridges, dead bridge and pavilions) will be undertaken as planned.
