Thanks to new software, Sony cameras can finally be used as a webcam

Sony has introduced new software called Imaging Edge Webcam, which turns 33 Sony cameras into one USB webcam.

Use your own camera as a webcam

Sony took its time. Most of the other camera manufacturers have already presented software or at least the beta version of software in the last few weeks with which their own cameras can be used as webcams. Due to the corona crisis and the home office associated with it, there was an increased demand for such programs, so the manufacturers have of course reacted.

Sony has not yet been on the list of companies that offer such software. Now the manufacturer has followed suit and has presented the Imaging Edge Webcam application. This is compatible with 33 different Sony cameras and is currently only available for Windows. Apple computer owners continue to look down the drain.

All newer Sony cameras are supported, even A-mount cameras such as the Sony A77 Mark II, Sony A99 Mark II or Sony A68 are compatible. Only the first generation of the Sony A7 and A7r series and the Sony A6000 are missing from the list of compatible devices.

Firmware update required for cameras

The compatible cameras also need a firmware update so that they can communicate correctly with the new software. As soon as everything is brought up to date, the Sony cameras should be able to easily be used as USB webcams for live streams and video telephony. In addition, the batteries of the cameras are charged when they are connected to the computer.

Sony Imaging Edge Webcam you can download it from the official website here – currently, as I said, unfortunately only for Windows. On the website you will also find more detailed information about the software and the download process.
