Thanks to Claro for Colombia, the country is transforming with technology

More than 2.5 million Colombians have accessed better opportunities of connectivity, education and inclusion with the initiatives carried out by the company during 2022.

Claro is increasingly consolidating itself as a key player for digital and social transformation in Colombia. Aware of the power of connectivity and supported by a firm commitment to the development of the country, the company is pursuing a series of initiatives in which technology is a powerful tool to transform lives.

Coverage, access, digital adoption and social inclusion, carbon neutrality and sustainable culture are at the heart of Claro for Colombia, the company’s sustainability strategy, with which it has reached the most isolated territories to bridge the digital and social divide and benefit from vulnerable communities.

The key lies in generating a precise synchronicity between corporate strategy and shared value, as explained by Carlos Zenteno, president of Claro Colombia. “We have aligned our business and sustainability strategy, developing initiatives that allow us to expand the impact of connectivity throughout Colombia, especially in the most remote and vulnerable rural areas.”

With solid actions, therefore, connectivity translates into better living conditions for the population, adds María Consuelo Castro, Claro’s Sustainability Manager for Colombia. “Besides implementing physical infrastructure, we seek to transform lives through technology. This is the higher purpose that guides us and sustains our lines of action”.

473 rural and remote areas of the country gained access to Claro’s 4G technology for the first time. 286,000 inhabitants of various departments benefited from it.

124 educational institutions from 61 municipalities in the country received free Internet with Connected Schools. 208,000 students, educators and managers benefited from it.

Digital adoption and social inclusion

2 million Colombians have registered on the free online educational platforms of the Carlos Slim Foundation and more than 700 people from vulnerable populations have had access to formal employment, thanks to the Work and Social Inclusion Pathway.

Nearly 3,200 children and adolescents have strengthened their life skills through technology, education and sports in 12 departments with the Copa Claro for Colombia.

Reduction of the carbon footprint

The company is making progress in reducing its carbon footprint: 1,743,374 electronic equipment salvaged with circular economy and reverse logistics schemes, and installation of solar panels and emissions management. 602.86 tons of CO2 and 343.93 tons of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment not generated.

“Everything now revolves around technology, so connection has been key in improving our educational quality. This is a diverse population, we still see a lot of inequality. Many children hadn’t had the opportunity to turn on a computer, get to know it and download content, until now,” she explains. Maricel Terranova, rector of IE Jorge Gaitán, in Puerto Gaitán, Meta.

“Football has changed me, because they teach us that at school you learn and move forward. My colleagues too. Several have been on the street all day and now, since there are rules, they must arrive well dressed, with their clean uniform and we must be well presented on the pitch to be able to train, so others go home,” he quotes Wilshey Haylen Rincones, Claro Cup participant for Colombia.
