The veteran Panamanian judoka, Basilio Martínez died this Monday at the age of 82. His son, Jair Martínez, remembers him through his lyrics, expressing his admiration for the man who gave him life.
We publish an article by Jair in tribute to his father.
As a teenager, I hardly slept, to wake up at dawn and accompany my father to work. In this way I traveled the whole country and I have fond memories with him.
Thank you Master / Arigato Sensei
• I never saw him argue with anyone, I never heard him speak ill of anyone. He taught me a great lesson “Jair who wants to help, helps” there are no excuses for not doing it; If you can help and if I didn’t say why you can’t. 1980
• Son Jair, that’s how you are and your personality I respect as well as your decisions; Advance fearlessly and build your destiny. 1983
• I witnessed the large number of people who identified with my father, he built a life full of good acts and episodes in his life that speak for themselves. It was arranged to place his name BASILIO, on each male child. I can scream that their first and last names always opened doors for me.
• Scholar, cultured, dancer, fashionable man, athlete, philanthropist, public speaker, writer, romantic, and poet. I just try to imitate him, but I don’t pretend to achieve his glory. Big Bas.
• Protector of all his family, parents, siblings, nephews, wife, children, grandchildren and all the great universe of human beings that surrounded him. Loved by his judo students, college classmates, friends from the chorrillo (neighborhood where he was born), the children and adolescents of Ancón Santa Ana avenue, neighbors from the entire 8-7 circuit, a father of all my friends.
• Attached to his socialist thoughts and in solidarity with the people. Fans of the New York Yankees, In the end he did not like boxing since he said it was an act of barbarism for these centuries, he invited to learn about personal defense and respect the opponent.
Thank you all for your messages at this time, in which you are lovingly reminded of the news that you have left earthly life.
I am grateful to GOD and I ask him to continue blessing all of you. I am happy to have had a beautiful human being as a father and I am grateful for the fortune of having shared with Basilio Martinez Ortega, my mother, my sisters, brothers, children, nephews, other relatives and friends the opportunity to love the great SENSEI
