People in Need announced the SOS Flood collection to help people in the affected areas. He has already released one million crowns from the humanitarian fund.

“We are currently mapping needs with mayors and crisis teams. In agreement with the Fire Rescue Service, we sent 15,000 missing bags to Olomouc for the construction of flood barriers, which had already arrived in Šumperk and Jeseník. We expect to continue delivering material aid as needed,” says Marek Štys, head of the flood team. “Just like in previous floods, after the water recedes, we will primarily help with financial donations to restore the houses and apartments of the most vulnerable who are unable to help themselves,” adds Štys, adding that the level of aid provided will depend mainly on how much can be collected in the public collection.

MAN IN DISTRESS:

We are connected to the integrated rescue system, regional and municipal fire brigades and cooperate with other non-governmental organizations. We provide food aid for the Jeseník area on weekends. During Saturday, for example, we prepared food packages that were distributed to evacuated residents in alternative accommodation facilities in Jeseníky.

We continuously adapt the help to the needs and the current situation. We have many years of experience with flood programs in the years 1997, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013, as well as from operations after the devastating tornado in Moravia in 2021. In natural disasters, usually:

  • In the first weeks, we provide immediate material assistance to affected households through municipalities and crisis teams.
  • Subsequently, we provide targeted financial assistance and assist in the restoration of affected households. We map the needs in affected areas, go around individual households and focus on helping the most vulnerable, individuals or families without relatives and larger savings.
  • We provide people with psychosocial support, we advise them on arranging assistance from the state, but also on house repairs or drying them out. We are often on the ground years after a disaster, when attention has shifted but people are still dealing with the aftermath.
  • In the long term, we also focus on disaster prevention, spatial planning, anti-flood measures, increasing the ability of the landscape to retain water and climate resistance.

It does not organize a material collection of appliances, furniture, clothes or food. We use food bank supplies for food aid. At present, we do not even coordinate volunteer assistance, but use the capacities of trained workers.
