Paris (awp/afp) – Thales has signed contracts with Emirates and Ethiopian Airlines to install its in-flight entertainment (IFE) system on board their planes, a key element of comfort for passengers highlighted by the companies, the French group announced on Wednesday.
IFEs consist of a screen installed in the seat and associated digital services, such as watching films, interactive maps, shopping and meal selection.
The French electronics and defense group, also present in civil aeronautics, announced that it had concluded a contract with the giant Emirates at the Dubai Air Show to equip its Boeing 777X with its IFE system called “Avant Up.”
The Emirati company, which already had 115 aircraft on order for the future wide-body aircraft, ordered 90 more on Monday. It must begin taking delivery in 2025.
The number of devices that Thales will equip out of the 205 has not been specified but the market falls for the French group in the class of “large contracts”, those of a minimum of 100 million euros, specifies we within the group.
Thales must already equip the fleet of 50 Airbus A350-900s ordered by Emirates.
It also announced on Wednesday that it had signed a contract with Ethiopian Airlines to equip the 4 Airbus A350-1000s with its IFE, which must be delivered from the end of 2024.
“As we strive to maintain our position as number one in Africa and among the largest airlines in the world, we know how much of our success depends on our ability to offer passengers the best possible on-board experience,” says the CEO of ‘Ethiopian Airlines Mesfin Tasew, quoted in the press release.
