Jakarta –
Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, has promised not to take any salary while in office. He admitted that he would donate all the salary and allowances he received from the government to various charities in the country.
Reporting from the Bangkok Post, Saturday (30/9/2023), Srettha’s monthly income as prime minister and concurrently finance minister reached 125,590 baht or Rp. 52,747,800 per month (exchange rate Rp. 420/Thai bath).
Of this amount, 75,590 baht or IDR 31,747,800 came from his salary as PM. Meanwhile, the other 50,000 baht or IDR 21 million comes from allowances for the position he currently occupies.
It was explained that all the income of Thailand’s new PM would be distributed through foundations to people in need. According to Sretta this is a faster way to provide assistance compared to relying on the normal legislative process or through the parliamentary system.
Later, Srettha will form a working team that will choose which foundation will receive monthly donations from him. The first donation will be distributed to the Foundation for Children.
Apart from that, Srettha also admitted that he would meet with charity foundations to listen to their problems and find ways to solve them.
“That is my personal determination. No, please do not pressure other people (to contribute their salaries),” the PM told the media yesterday.
Srettha stressed that Thailand’s other ministers did not need to donate their salaries, adding that he did not want to publicize or make a big deal out of it.
