Thailand recently marked the first anniversary of its decriminalization of cannabis. Since the law came into effect, over a million citizens have registered to grow the plant and almost 5,000 dispensaries have been opened in the country. While the change was hailed as a major boost to the agricultural sector and for tourism, there are now concerns over the future of the industry as the country awaits the formation of a new government. The Move Forward Party, which won a surprise victory in May’s election, has been criticised for proposing to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic. The proposal came as the party was trying to win over support from more conservative factions, including its largest coalition partner, the populist Pheu Thai party, which campaigned on an anti-cannabis platform.
