Thailand’s Backpacker Paradise Getting Noisy, Residents Complain Upset

Bangkok

Khaosan Road is a backpackers paradise in Thailand. During the pandemic it was quiet, now the residents there are complaining because it’s starting to get crowded.

Business on Khaosan Road is back on track. Lots backpacker who come back to vacation there. But apparently this made residents there complain because of noise pollution.

Imagine, there are many night tour businesses along the way. Every day they put on music or give a concert with the sound of the speakers blaring.

Reported from Tigerresidents also gave 15 days, so that businesses related to night tours could adjust the noise level and others.

City hall managed to negotiate with 30 members of the Khaosan Road Business Operators Association, representatives from the surrounding community, senior police and officials from various agencies.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) also acknowledged this. According to Deputy Municipal Officer Suksan Kittisupakorn, BMA is responding to the increasing complaints from residents living near Khaosan Road.

They have expressed frustration with loud music and distracting entertainment, even though they have long held the title of Thailand’s most popular backpacker destination.

“The meeting decided unanimously that operators of companies providing food and beverage services must control the volume of loud music or performances within 15 days,” said Suksan.

Now nightclubs on Khaosan Road must have airtight or vibration-tight rooms if they want to play music. Then, the noise volume is also regulated, it cannot be more than 90 decibels.

“Loudspeakers cannot be installed in front of business premises to prevent noise that disturbs citizens,” he said.

At this meeting, officials reported that six companies were holding music concerts at volumes that were too loud and threatening residents’ health.

“BMA will take strong legal action against companies that fail to improve their soundness within the 15 day period,” he continued.

The number of complaints related to noise in the area continues to increase. The residents of Khaosan Road don’t want this noise to escalate and disturb the lives of residents.
