Thailand U-16 coach can speak Indonesian, surprises journalists

Trainer Thailand U-16 national team, Pop Onmosurprised a number of journalists after the match against Laos in AFF U-16 Cup 2022 by speaking Indonesian.

Thailand almost lost to Laos in the 2022 AFF U-16 Cup Group B match at Maguwoharjo Stadium, Sleman, Thursday (4/8). The War Elephants team drew 1-1 with Laos after falling behind first.

Quoted from Antara, after the match a number of national journalists tried to interview Pipob Onmo. As soon as Pipob crossed the interview area or mixed zone, a number of journalists using English tried to stop Pipob from interviewing.

“Can we have a short interview, coach,” said a number of national journalists to Pipob.

Interestingly, Pipob answered the question using Indonesian. Pipob replied: “Oh, I can.”

The answer took a number of journalists by surprise. When asked if he could speak Indonesian, Pipob then replied: “A little bit.”

The 43-year-old coach then explained how he could speak Indonesian. Pipob admitted that he had a career in the Indonesian League.

“I once played in Persisam Putra Samarinda, about 20 years ago,” said Pipob.

PSSI Bandung media officer Saputra who stood with a number of journalists then asked Pipob. “That time you [main] with his Pipat Thonka?” asked Bandung.

Pipat is a player of Persisam Putra Samarinda, a club which has now changed its name to Bali United in Liga 1. Pipob admits that he knows Pipat.

“He played him there [Persisam] before me. I was there for about six months,” said Pipob.

Pipob is one of the former Thai players who has quite good achievements. As a player he won the Thai League three times, twice with BEC Tero Sasana and once with Chonburi FC. At the two clubs, he also won seven other local titles in Thailand.

Pipob also briefly became a striker for the Thai national team in the 2000s. He retired as a footballer in 2019 and then made a career as an assistant coach at Chonburi FC. Two years later, he was withdrawn by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) to manage the Thailand U-16 national team.
