Thailand Is Not Fine, Lockdown & Curfew!

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Thai capital, Bangkok, Monday (12/7) imposed restrictions on community mobility by implementing a curfew. This is done because Thailand is currently still battling a spike in cases due to the highly contagious Alpha and Delta variants.

At least Thailand has so far recorded more than 345,000 cases and 2,791 deaths, most of which were contributed by this new wave in April.

This first case was first detected at a nightclub frequented by Thai politicians in the nightlife district of Bangkok City. The spike was also exacerbated by limited vaccine rollouts and limited coronavirus testing capacity.

“The situation is worrying. Many of the new confirmed cases of the Delta variant have spread to other provinces, both to residential areas and to factory areas,” Thailand’s Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, quoted him as saying. AFP, Monday (12/7).

Health authorities are also monitoring seven people who are suspected of having the Alpha and Delta variants of their bodies.

Apart from Bangkok, nine other provinces which are also experiencing an increase in infections have also been tightened by the authorities. Checkpoints appeared across Bangkok in the early hours of Monday morning. The public is now restricted from doing activities from 9 pm to 4 am.

Residents are also prohibited from gathering in groups of more than five people, while public transport links will be closed from 9pm.

Supermarkets, restaurants, banks, pharmacies and electronics stores within the mall remain open, but other shops are closed.

This restriction has come under fire from restaurant owners. Restaurant entrepreneurs said the Thai government imposed a lockdown but did not compensate the public.

However, there are also parties who support this action, such as students. “The government should implement this sooner,” he said.

What is clear is that this outbreak has hit poor communities in Thailand, especially those who live in dense settlements. One of the temples that handles free funerals for the underprivileged has also been overwhelmed by the number of Covid-19 victims.

Thailand Uses Mixed Vaccine

Thai authorities also approved the use of the Covid-19 vaccine injection from China, Sinovac as the first dose, and AstraZeneca as the second dose.

It is not clear why this decision was made. But the decision came after government officials announced on Sunday nearly 900 medical staff who received the Sinovac injection had tested positive for Covid-19.

The authority added that medical staff who have received two doses of Sinovac will get a booster injection of AstraZeneca or Pfizer – BioNTech.
