It’s a story of rediscovery of the past as told by the New York Times. In 1944, a United States Air Force P38 Lightning crashed into the rice fields of Baan Mae Kua, Thailand, in the province of Lampang. He was probably returning from an aerial reconnaissance operation over Burma, where the allies were fighting the Japanese army. A few months ago, an expedition of historians financed by the Pentagon began to exhume traces of the device.
The objective is to find the remains of the pilot of the device, which the oldest of the village remember having seen in flames above the rice fields. The P38 Lightning was also the plane piloted by the writer Antoine de Saint Exupery, the wreckage of which was found off the coast of Corsica.
