Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Thailand is developing a virus detection tool corona SARS-CoV-2 from underarm sweat.
According to the researchers armpit sweat may contain samples of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This new type of virus detection tool will also be tested on traders at a market in the capital Bangkok this week.
“From the samples, we found that people infected with Covid-19 secrete very different chemicals,” said Dr. Chadin Kulsing, a researcher from Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University, on Thursday (9/9).
“We used these findings to develop a device that detects specific odors produced by certain bacteria in the sweat of Covid-19 patients,” he added
Kulsing claims that the Covid-19 test with this tool is 95 percent accurate. He also hopes that this test can be an alternative tool for detecting Covid-19 at a more affordable price polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and antigens.
Until now, the tool is still in the development stage. Research related to this device has not yet been published or verified by authorized institutions.
This Covid-19 test kit from sweat adapts a device normally used to detect toxic chemicals.
Later, the patient was asked to put a cotton swab under the arm for 15 minutes, before the cotton was put into a glass bottle and sterilized with ultraviolet light. The result will be completed within 30 seconds.
“The technician then takes an appropriate amount of the sample using a suction hose and presses it into the test bottle to get the results,” Kulsing said.
The public’s response to this armpit test is positive. Traders at the Bangkok market think the device is more convenient to use than a nasal swab test.
“With the PCR test I have to be in the laboratory where the test is, sit and wait for the results and it’s just a waste of my time,” said one seller as reported by AFP.
Just like most countries in Southeast Asia, Thailand is still battling a third wave of Covid-19 infections exacerbated by the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
To date, the total number of Covid-19 infections in Thailand has reached 1.3 million cases. On this day, Thailand recorded 16,000 new cases in a day.
