Thailand Considers Legalizing Casinos to Boost Tourism: Will it be the Next Macau?

Bangkok

Thailand keep racking your brains to pamper tourists. Previously it was not approved, now the white elephant country is considering legalizing casinos again.

Reporting from Vietnam Express on Sunday (17/3/2024), the plan is to attract tourism investment. Thailand refers to research data submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR).

Two types of gambling that Thailand allows are horse racing and lottery. Of these two types of gambling alone, at least 10% of Thai people are addicted. The research was carried out by a 60-member committee of government and opposition lawmakers.

Wanting to be like Macau, many people believe that Thailand’s legal casino market will attract tourists and provide strong competition in the world. Moreover, Macau is the only and largest legal gambling place in Asia.

Legalizing gambling has been discussed by the government in the past, but resistance from the public meant that the idea sank and was never discussed again. In a 2021 poll, around 41.51% of people opposed the legalization of gambling due to moral and crime issues, while 21.25% gave approval.

Parliament previously approved a similar study last year, but the council was disbanded before the cabinet could consider it. Under the proposal in the study, private companies would cover the costs of building and operating entertainment complexes consisting of casinos, while the government would be responsible for taxation and regulation.

“Thai companies and foreign investors with experience in this will be responsible for the bulk of the investment,” said Sorawong Thienthong, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee.

Furthermore, the construction of the entertainment complex will be carried out at a major tourist attraction and will be 100 km from the airport at a cost of 100 billion baht. Sorawong said the study could be considered for parliamentary approval on March 28.

“We want to finalize the legislation and start selling permits to investors in this administration,” he said.
