Thai navy ship sunk in Gulf of Thailand, 33 marines missing | Abroad

A Thai navy ship has sunk in the Gulf of Thailand. As a result, 33 people disappeared. The Thai military is using three naval vessels and two helicopters to search for the missing persons on board.

The battleship HTMS Sukhothai suffered an engine failure while there were high waves. The small frigate sank about 32 kilometers off the Thai coast, south of Bangkok.

73 of the 106 people on board were rescued during a night rescue operation. The navy’s Twitter account shows a group of rescued crew members in orange vests sitting on a black inflatable raft.

The other 33 people had to get off the sinking ship before a raft was ready. It is not known how many lifeboats there were.

Due to the strong waves, the ship capsized and was flooded with sea water. Then she sank, a Navy spokesman said. Sukhothai, a smaller type of warship, was built in 1987.

Improvement: An earlier version of this post claimed the Marines were missing. This is incorrect. This generally affects crew members. The post has since been edited.
