Bangkok, November 30, 2024 (AFP) – A Thai fisherman died after an “attack” on Saturday in Burmese waters and 31 fishermen were taken to that country, the head of the Thai Navy told AFP.

The southern Ranong province’s fisheries department said in a statement that “armed fishing boats from Myanmar” attacked Thai fishing vessels about 20 kilometers west of Phayam Island off the Thai coast.

The incident prompted a warning to fishermen and boat owners to avoid areas near Burma.

Suwat Donsakul, a navy commander in Ranong province, told AFP that a Thai fisherman had drowned after “throwing himself into the water during the attack” and that “31 people were taken to Burma”. , without specifying who arrested them.

He said that several Thai fishing boats were sailing in Burmese waters at the time of the incident.

AFP contacted the Burmese junta for comment, without immediate response.

The leader announced that he had instructed the local authorities to negotiate with their Burmese counterparts to release the fishermen.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also start talks with the Burmese side to release them, a ministry spokesman told AFP.
