Thai national team lost 0-2 to Iran in the round of 16 in men’s football Asian Games 2023 di Stadion Shangcheng Sports Centre, Hangzhou, Rabu (27/9).
Iran’s two goals against Thailand could not be separated from goalkeeper Nopphon Lakhonphon’s mistakes. Iran took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute through Amir Arsalan Motahari’s goal. The goal started from a blunder made by Nopphon.
Intending to build an attack from below, Nopphon actually made a blunder. Nopphon took too long to kick until the ball hit Arsalan’s foot and went into the Thai goal.
Throughout the first 45 minutes of the first half, Iran dominated the attacks. Even Thailand is more under siege. Luckily the team’s defense line coached by Issara Sritaro was very strong.
Thailand was also not without opportunities in the first half. In the 39th minute, Thailand scored a goal through Yotsakorn Burapha’s hard kick. But the referee disallowed the goal for offside.
Thailand also had a chance in the 45th minute. The War Elephant Team threatened with a counterattack, but Kittisak Phutchan’s kick after receiving Yotsakorn’s pass was too weak and was easily anticipated by Iranian goalkeeper Seyed Hossein.
In the second half Thailand seemed to play better than Iran. Thailand threatened several times and had golden opportunities, but always failed to break into Iran’s goal.
Having fun attacking, Thailand actually experienced a disaster in the 79th minute. Nopphon fouled the Iranian striker in the penalty box. The referee also pointed to the spot.
Yasin Salmani, who stepped up as penalty executor, did his job perfectly. The score of 2-0 for Iran lasted until the match was over.
In the quarter-finals of the 2023 Asian Games, Sunday (1/9), Iran will face the winner between Hong Kong vs Palestine.
Other Southeast Asian representatives, Indonesia and Myanmar, will compete on Thursday (28/9). Indonesia will face Uzbekistan and Myanmar will challenge Japan.
