A resort on a Thai island has sued an American for a negative review on Tripadvisor, the Thai authorities said on Saturday. He could be sentenced to two years in prison.
There is still domestic tourism in Thailand, where the number of coronavirus infections is relatively small.
Thais and expats mainly go to almost empty resorts on the island of Koh Chang, which is known for its sandy beaches and turquoise waters.
For example, the American Wesley Barnes visited the Sea View Resort on the island. However, the expat ran into trouble after writing negative online reviews about his vacation.
American would have damaged hotel reputation
“The owner of the Sea View Resort filed a complaint because the suspect posted unfair reviews about his hotel on the Tripadvisor website,” Thanapon Taemsara of Koh Chang police told the news agency. AFP.
Barnes is accused of damaging the hotel’s reputation. He is also said to have argued with the staff about the payment of corkage for alcohol brought to the hotel.
Barnes was arrested and released on bail
Barnes was arrested by the immigration police. He was held briefly and then released on bail.
According to the Tripadvisor review that Barnes posted in July, he encountered “unfriendly staff” and did not feel welcome.
