A brief review until the Feb. scholarship is applied for.
and chose to study in the Netherlands

When life meets a moment, you fall in love with Europe!

The starting point was when I was in my 3rd year on an exchange at a university in Austria. Then I got to travel in total to more than 10 countries. I really liked it and I intend to come back to study in Europe again. Therefore, it was the driving force for applying for the February scholarship, focusing on looking for programs that were consistent with our background and interests.

Another thing is that after graduating from bachelor’s degree, we applied to be teachers in the project. Teach for Thailand Actually teaching in a school for 2 years, it allowed us to see problems in the community that were still waiting to be resolved. It instills the idea of wanting to create even more impact on society. Then, that year, the Civil Service Commission scholarship opened for people interested in studying in the Economic Development field and then being placed under the Office of the Auditor General of Thailand (OAG), so I decided to try applying.

For the February scholarship, this will cover expenses for preparing before traveling, computer fees, round-trip airfare, tuition/books/study supplies, expenses during study including accommodation, food, and other expenses. Also

Share the process of applying for a February scholarship and applying to study briefly.

When you start to arrive, you have to check the regulations carefully. He will announce branches and countries. (The course name must be the same or similar) and specify which department’s requirements it is. You must study it carefully because it is a scholarship with obligations. After graduating, you must return to work in that organization twice as much as you did when you studied.

At that time we applied for a branch. Development Economics and want to study in Europe We sat down and searched for information about where they were teaching and who were good at this. I applied to several places and was accepted into 3 places. Finally, I chose the Development Studieis major, Economic of Development, or development economics at ISS Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Because the course structure is interesting It is famous in the field that we will study. And it takes only 15 months to study.

Fly across the skies to famous institutions in the Netherlands.
@ Erasmus University Rotterdam

If you say your name “Erasmus University Rotterdam” European people, including Dutch people, will definitely know this. Because it is a very famous and big university. It’s just that our program is at a campus in The Hague, not Rotterdam.

The only Thai student in the class

At that time, I chose to study for a master’s degree abroad because I wanted to be in an environment where I could meet a lot of foreign people. I will force myself to speak English and learn about cultures other than Thai. When I arrived, I was satisfied! 5555 We study on the Erasmus+ program that brings together people from every corner of the world. Only accepting a few people per country. The most friends are Latin America (speaking Spanish), Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Indonesia, etc. When the countries are spread out, there will be no grouping. No one has to feel alienated.

Honestly, I feel a little lonely. Because Thai people are very unique. When we were younger, we couldn’t find common ground with our classmates about culture, language, or religion, etc. But no matter what, I can talk to everyone.

What do you study?

If translated directly, it is “Economics of Development” People who study will come from developing countries. There may be social issues in areas that you are interested in and want to promote, such as agriculture (Agricultrue), social justice (Social Justice), human-centered driving (Human Driven), economy (Economics), equality. Sexuality (Gender Equality), Capitalism (Capitalism), etc.

Friends come from social sciences, law, economics, political science, journalism. There are people who want to do NGO, UN, or broader policy work. Government social enterprises driver Or there are teachers too. Which makes friends in a variety of classes even more cool. Because we will learn case studies (Case Studies) from around the world and hear the advantages and disadvantages. Open your eyes and ears to perspectives that you are unfamiliar with or have never experienced before. Suppose that Thai students like us rarely study Latin American history in depth. When I came here I learned and updated news from my friends in an insider way.

and whether during class or outside of class Politics and news topics are common topics for friends to discuss. He follows the news all the time. and has a passion for things that are very interesting Many times, friends inspire us to want to go deeper into the subject. For example, the issue of Israel vs. Palestine. Many of my friends are Activists (=movers) who are a voice for the Palestinian people. It gives us the opportunity to listen to this side of the story in more depth. When interested, go back and read the history of what happened. Why did he start conflicting? Or some people are interested in the issue of China vs. Russia and come share what happened.

As for us, being the only Thai people, we were very comfortable. To share and ask other people’s academic views. During Debate, everyone has the freedom to express their opinions. Hot discussions in class But outside of class, everyone is friends as usual. There was no offense from what was shared in class. I told my friend that Thailand is a developing country. But it’s capitalism. Focus on working to make money. But I want to make a good impact. to our country’s society

Give an example of a course.

Development economics program that we study It is a year and a half course (15.5 months) divided into 40 weeks of coursework (60 credits) and 25 weeks of research (28 credits). And unlike other majors, it is Lecture-based.

Studies do not focus on micro/macroeconomics. But will apply knowledge to economic growth (Economic Growth) such as how to make developing countries grow in pace with other countries, how many types of economic poverty are there, what does GDP mean under that number, study about Evaluation of Theory of Change Theory of Change How do you measure, evaluate, and set KPIs? It’s different from other majors in that you study a lot of math. Based on mathematics, tangible

to see the picture Examples of subjects that we have studied are: Econometrics, Development Policies, Project and Program Evaluation, Economic Growth ฯลฯ And in the first semester, there will be a compulsory course that every MA in Development Studies student must take (the information in the table below has been updated from the latest Academic Calendar 2023/24).

Economics• Introduction to Economic Theories
• Development Economics
• Regression and Data AnalysisSociology• Sociology at Work
• Contemporary Social TheoryPolitical Science• Politics of Modern Development — Decolonizing Power
Politics, Power and Development

Some subjects have very interesting teaching methods, such as The Making of Developments, taught 2 times a week, starting with a discussion in small groups about social issues that are happening, such as Climate Change, etc. There will be a Facilitator (neutral) and people in the group must read. The paper came in advance for Discus. And then when the small session ends Everyone must come up with a question together. (It must be something that has been well thought out.) Another day, let’s discuss in a large room that includes the whole generation. Facilities will collect questions from all groups and show them on the screen. The teacher will answer questions. If anyone disagrees, they can raise their hand to ask or express their opinion.

What was the most annoying moment in your Master’s degree life?

Of course, that’s when doing the Thesis. Haha. I focus on topics that interest me and I’m confident that I’ll be able to find the information. Finally, I chose to make a list of factors that affect the government budget allocation for basic education each year.

Non-mandatory internship
But it has been fully applied. Unbelievable

The program does not require internships to be completed. But I went to practice to gain experience. I’d like to see how organizations in this field work abroad. At that time, I started by looking for a partner on LinkedIn and applying for training at several places. But in the end I got FMO: Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank A Dutch bank that focuses on investing in developing countries to create economic growth and reduce inequality in the country.

During the internship, we read the entire Annual Sustainability Report, understanding the mission, vision, and policy setting. And what form of action did it take? I saw the investment portfolio, where to invest, how to invest, how to reduce inequality. See the overall picture of how an organization can grow while creating a positive impact on society.

We arrived and started learning all about it. The perfect coincidence was that after working at the State Audit Office of the Kingdom of Thailand (SAO), there was work for us to do. Sustainablity Report just right!! Now it is an issue that is of global interest. And the duty of the State Audit Office is to inspect the annual reports of government agencies. and prepare a sustainability report to serve as a role model. This part must also be applied from the standards of the private sector.

And when my boss saw that we had trained in this field So he sent us to a meeting with a world-class state audit agency. Glad to get this opportunity But there are serious challenges. When I arrived, I was the youngest person at that event, haha.

Actually, since returning from school I’ve worked in Morocco, Kazakhstan, and Finland, but I have to say that it’s very stressful, not like traveling. But at the same time, I’m happy to have the opportunity to go to work and open up to the world in a way that I never expected before.

Review of living life
Edition for Thai students in the Netherlands

1. Netherlands, land of Freedom

The Netherlands has freedom of expression. Protests often occur. The peak is assuming that the issue is about whose country it is. Friends also helped to make signs and join in protesting in front of the embassy. The reason is because he sees from a big perspective that it is more about “principles” than “country” whether the person who violates the principles is the country itself or not. He wanted to be involved in bringing about change.

Protesting here is not dangerous. His country already encourages people to express themselves. There is a designated area for people to protest. “Dam Square” (Dam Square) City of Amsterdam (Amsterdam) Suppose there is an issue such as Climate Change. There will be an announcement and people will know where to go if they want to participate. And there is a designated zone that prohibits leaving this area. Must strictly respect the rules.

All this The protests in the Netherlands were not in vain. Because those involved will be aware of the problem and take action without being ignored.

2. Adapt to the weather

Personally, I like cold more than hot. So I like the weather in the Netherlands more. But in the beginning, you had to adjust to the weather. Overall, it was dull and there was not much sunlight. (Especially during the winter, it may get dark from 4:00 PM) There will be some periods where it’s very unstable. It’ll be overcast, it’ll rain. It might rain for 5 minutes and stop. Pick up your umbrella and it rains again. // People in the Netherlands can ride bicycles in all weather conditions. But I recommend checking the weather before leaving the house.

3. The landscape allows us to enjoy nature.

It’s truly diverse and helps you get through life that’s tiring and stressful. Near the forest, near the beach. Whenever you’re stressed, you can walk into the forest or invite friends for a picnic. Plus, entering the forest, there is a pond and a lake in the middle.

Being a small country Everything is connected. People connect with nature Nature connected to the city and connect with culture We live in a student dormitory that is a 10 minute walk to the city centre. Galleries or museums Everything will be concentrated here. Suppose on Saturday and Sunday we want to go to a nearby city. You can take the train or just take the train for 10 minutes to reach the next city. Don’t waste time with traffic jams on the road.
