Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Thai government has a new way to improve the domestic economy, namely by legalizing casinos.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin explained that his party was considering drafting regulations regarding this matter. He said the law would bring many benefits to the country.

One of them is that it can open up many new job opportunities. Apart from that, it can also generate income for Thailand, including through tax collection.

Thavisin explained that the government’s plan was not a promotion of gambling. Instead, they chose to supervise the activity.

“We do not want to promote gambling, preferring to monitor it and use investment to create jobs,” he explained, quoted from CNBC InternationalSunday (31/3/2024).

A study in parliament said the legalization of casino activities to attract Thai investment and tourism.

Many people think legal casinos will attract many visitors from outside Thailand. This activity could also create strong competition for the world’s legal gambling giant, Macau.

The plan will expand the gambling activities permitted in Thailand. The country only allows gambling on horse racing and state-controlled lotteries.

Until now, Thailand has never legalized gambling. However, there are still many underground casinos and football betting, even though these activities have been banned by the state.

Thai people are also known to gamble in neighboring countries such as Cambodia. They will visit large casino complexes in each country.
