Thai doctors use HIV treatment in patients with coronaviruses

Bangkok

Two Thai doctors said Sunday that they have managed to cure a patient of Wuhan coronavirus with a mixture of HIV medications and a flu remedy.

The patient is a 71-year-old Chinese woman who was admitted to a hospital in Hua Hing, southwest of Bangkok, and was later translated with severe symptoms at Rajavithi hospital in the capital thai, according to the Bangkok Post.

Doctors Kriangsak Atipornvanich and Suebsai Kongsangdao of Rajavithi indicated in a press conference that the woman recovered 48 hours after starting to receive the medicines.

The treatment consists of oseltamivir, an anti-flu used in patients of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and two antiretroviral drugs used together against HIV: lopinavir and ritonavir.

On January 24, a group of Chinese scientists indicated in The Lancet that they are conducting clinical trials to cure the coronavirus with lopinavir and ritonavir, which were already used during the severe acute respiratory syndrome crisis (SARS) in 2003 and 2004.

The Wuhan coronavirus (2019-nCoV), similar to that caused by the common cold, SARS and MERS, causes symptoms such as fever, cough and sore throat, as well as kidney failure and pneumonia, which can cause death.

This new coronavirus strain was detected in the Wuhan Chinese city at the end of December and since then it has expanded to more than twenty countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Australia, the United States, Germany and Spain.
