Texas Woman Falsely Charged with Murder for ‘Self-Induced Abortion’ – Prosecutor Fined and Suspended

This is a case that happened almost two years ago. In April 2022, a 26-year-old woman in Texas was told she was being charged with murder. According to the authorities, she had a ‘self-induced abortion’ on her conscience.

Forbidden, but no murder

Texas already had one of the strictest abortion laws in the United States, but there is no rule that makes termination of pregnancy a homicide.

The case led to major protests. “What crime has this woman been accused of?” said the director of an organization that advocates for women who want an abortion, for example.

The woman spent two nights in jail before the charges against her were dropped. However, at that time she was already known as a murder suspect. The prosecutor who initiated this, Gocha Ramirez, has now been fined for this.

Fine and conditional suspension

He is fined 1,250 dollars (more than 1,150 euros) for the case. He has also been conditionally suspended for twelve months. If he doesn’t make the mistake again, he can continue working.

“I made a mistake in the case,” Ramirez counters AP news agency about the murder case he started against the woman in April 2022.

Details about how the woman obtained an abortion have never been released.

A few months after the case, the US Supreme Court ended the right to abortion nationwide. It has since been banned in several US states to have an abortion.
