In Texas, calls to secede from the United States have emerged amid disputes in Congress over immigration controls.
According to Newsweek, the Texas National Party (TNM; also known as Texit) said it will place the issue of state independence on the ballot in the Republican primaries – they will be held in every US state. The movement’s decision has already received enormous support in Texas, gaining 139 thousand votes against the required 97 thousand.
TNM is considered the region’s largest organization promoting Texas independence. State Senator Bob Hall spoke at the inaugural TNM conference this year. Many conservatives and Republicans also support the initiative.
In the upcoming GOP primaries, the movement proposes to raise the question: “Should Texas reaffirm its status as an independent nation?”
However, the chairman of the state Republican Party blocked this initiative, Newsweek notes.
The state Constitution provides for the possibility of secession from the United States. However, experts interviewed by Newsweek warn that Texas independence could lead to economic disaster for both the state and the United States as a whole.
Amid the growing popularity of TNM, Texas authorities decided to raise the issue of border protection. Gov. Greg Abbott accused President Joe Biden’s administration of failing to meet its responsibilities to protect the U.S. perimeter from illegal migration. Therefore, the Texas authorities are ready to independently ensure the security of their section of the border with Mexico.
Texas was an independent republic from 1836 to 1845, until it was annexed by the United States.
