Arriving by the southern route, the old Alcoa aluminum smelter still saturates the landscape. Chimneys flashing to avoid a collision with an airplane are the last sign of life at the site, which closed its doors in 2008 after half a century of operation, leaving hundreds of employees on the floor in the middle of the prairies of the Texas, an hour’s drive from Austin.
