Texas Senator Accuses AMLO Uses ‘Abusive Power’

Mexico City.- Republican Senator from Texas, United States, Ted Cruz, said that in Latin America there are authoritarian and socialist governments that must be fought. He exemplified the case of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whom he accused of exercising “abusive powers”.

On the second day of the Conservative Action Political Conference (CPAC) in Mexico, the lawmaker who has openly criticized Tabasco’s policies said the Latin American region and the Western Hemisphere are experiencing “threats” perpetrated by Castro supporters.

“Gustavo Petro has taken control of Colombia, Lula Da Silva is sadly set to take control of Brazil… US allies across the region, those who remain, are or are facing major threats,” he said.

“The Biden administration seems ideologically committed to alienating and displacing our allies and empowering our enemies, and in that goal, perhaps in that goal, they have been catastrophically successful,” he considered.
He highlighted the case of this country, where he said that organizations and freedom of expression are being eroded by the leadership of the current federal government.

“In Mexico we are seeing that they do not rest and we are seeing the erosion of civil society, this faced by journalists and politicians in Mexico is very dangerous. In 2020, more journalists were murdered in Mexico than in any other country in the world and it was only a third of journalists murdered worldwide; a dozen journalists have been murdered this year alone,” she said.

“President López Obrador is trying to make these trends even worse and it seems that he is part of an abusive power not only in Mexico or in Mexico-US relations,” he added.
She recalled that her father was Latino, of Cuban descent, and struggled to live in freedom in an environment of repression and socialism.

To fight against “the socialist and authoritarian forces that want to try to get rid of freedom”, he recommended defending freedom, letting oneself be guided by the light and the truth and not giving up.

“Never close your eyes to the socialism that is spreading in Central and South America we are witnessing poverty, suffering and death because of them. Thank you for standing up for Mexico and thank you very much for standing up for freedom all over the world,” she said.

Last July, as part of AMLO’s visit to the neighboring nation, Cruz was one of the US senators who criticized the Mexican president’s public order in areas such as the energy sector, security policy and the investment environment that they considered compromised shared interests between Mexico and the United States.

They also required him to respect autonomous Mexican organizations such as the National Electoral Institute (INE), as well as to respect the trade agreement with the United States and Canada (T-MEC).
