Texas Rangers Make History with Five Starters in All-Star Game

NEW YORK — The Texas Rangers will become the first team in 47 years to have five of their position players start in the All-Star Game, as Adolis Garcia was called in to replace an injured player, Friday.

Austin Hays of the Baltimore Orioles and Garcia have been called on to relieve Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.

Garcia will reunite with teammates Jonah Heim, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Josh Jung on Tuesday in Seattle. Rounding out the American League starting lineup are Yandy Diaz and Randy Arozarena, both of the Tampa Bay Rays, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, and Hays.

Only two other teams have ever had five starters in the All-Star Game: the Yankees in 1939 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1956, 1957 and 1976.

Judge hasn’t played since tearing a big toe ligament in his right foot on June 3 while driving into the fence at Dodger Stadium to make a catch. Trout injured his left wrist when hitting a foul ball on Monday and had surgery on Wednesday.

Also, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson will not play with a left heel injury that has sidelined him since Tuesday. Cleveland Guardians reliever Emmanuel Clase will not go to the classic since his wife is due to give birth to their child any day.

They were replaced Friday by Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Geraldo Perdomo and Angels reliever Carlos Estevez. They will both be making their first appearance in the All-Star Game.
