Texas Med Aide says he learned of his daughter’s death from one of her classmates who was “covered in blood.”

  • A Texas father told CNN his daughter was killed in a mass shooting Tuesday while trying to call the police.

  • Amerie Joe Garza, 10, was one of 21 people killed in an attack on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

  • “How do you look at that little girl and shoot her?” said Angel Garza. “How do you shoot my baby?”

A father whose 10-year-old daughter was killed in Tuesday’s mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, said he learned of her death when he arrived at the scene and met one of her friends.

Angel Garza, a medical assistant, told it CNNs Anderson Cooper that he started assisting first responders as soon as he arrived at school.

Garza said he saw a little girl who was “just covered in blood from head to toe” and went over to ask her if she was okay.

“She was hysterical and said they shot their best friend, they killed their best friend, that she’s not breathing,” Garza said through tears. “That she tried to call the police. And I asked the little girl her name and she said Amerie.”

When the 18-year-old suspect was at Amerie Jo Garza’s school, The 4th grader on the honor roll tried to call the policeGarza told CNN.

“She was trying to do the right thing,” her father said. “She just tried to call the police … and I’m guessing he just shot her.”

Amerie had just gotten her phone for her 10th birthday two weeks earlier, Garza told Cooper while hugging a framed photo of his daughter. Two students in her classroom confirmed to Garza that Amerie had tried to alert authorities.

“She’s wanted a phone for so long and we finally got it for her,” Garza said through tears.

Garza told CNN that he and his wife must try to explain Amerie’s death to their 3-year-old son. He asked the public to keep his wife in their prayers.

“Amerie had the best mother. She’s done everything for her daughter and she’s getting so worked up about it,” he said.

Garza said he wanted people to know that his daughter died trying to save her classmates.

“How do you look at that little girl and shoot her?” he said. “How do you shoot my baby?”
