Texas Man’s Limb Amputations from Typhus Linked to Flea Bite: A Rare and Devastating Case

Texas man has both arms and part of leg amputated due to typhus caused by flea bite, writes the New York Post. The victim, 35-year-old Michael Kohlhoff, was taken to a San Antonio emergency room after lost feeling in his toeswhich his family initially thought were symptoms of a severe flu.

The man soon went into septic shock and was urgently placed on treatment because his organs began to fail. Kohlhoff’s mother says doctors told her she should invite relatives to say goodbye to the victim. The man’s brother says that Michael he was close to death several times.

After 11 days of intensive care, Kohlhoff’s condition stabilized, but due to the use of vasopressors, he developed dry gangrene of the hands and feet. The gangrene did not respond to treatment, as a result of which doctors were forced to amputate both his arms up to the forearm, as well as part of his leg.

Doctors named the cause of sepsis and the rapid deterioration of the man’s health typhoid fever, which according to relatives was caused by a single flea bite. Doctors told the family that the type of typhus Kohlhoff suffered from is extremely rare in the United States.

The fleas that carry typhus are found in tropical and subtropical climates around the world, and the infection can cause liver, kidney, heart, lung and brain failure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
