Authorities reported that a Texas man posed as a minor to lure convicted child sex offender and kill himclaiming that authorities do not do enough to keep pedophiles in prison.
James Spencer III, 24, contacted Sean Connery Showers, 37, through the Kik messaging application, where he posed as a minor to have conversations of a sexual nature with the subject and plan a meeting.
On May 29, 2023, Showers arrived at the 900 block of Northwood St in Houston for the alleged encounter, but He was shot from a car that stopped next to him and then fled the scene.
Surveillance video in the area allowed investigators to determine that a car arrived around 3:50 a.m., stopped, and within four seconds fired numerous shots “similar to those from an automatic” and accelerated, according to a search warrant cited. on ABC 13.
Another driver found Showers’ lifeless body in a ditch inside the residential neighborhood.
Investigators connected Spencer to Showers’ death after a phone found under the man’s lifeless body had messages indicating he planned to meet someone at nearby Montie Beach Park.
“(Spencer and Showers) communicated through a social media application. The communications were sexual in nature. Officers believe they were gathering at this park to engage in sexual activity,” said 179th District Court Chief Prosecutor Rehman Merchant.
Some of Spencer’s messages were apparently used to get Showers to admit his past.
“There are some communications by phone or between the two about (Showers’) dealings or past interactions with children or minors,” Merchant said.
In 2009, Showers pleaded guilty to federal possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, in addition to registering as a sex offender. Ten years later he was sentenced to two more years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, according to records obtained by the outlet.
Spencer allegedly stated repeatedly that authorities were not doing enough to stop sexual predators.
“A third claims that Spencer told them that he believed the police were not doing enough to keep pedophiles in prison and Spencer wanted to rob and harm those types of men because they would do bad things to little children and other people. “He knew how to track them using an app on his phone,” stated his bail order, obtained by KTRK.
“A month later, the defendant made the same comment that ‘if the police weren’t going to do anything, maybe he should kill them himself,’” the document added.
Police also linked Spencer to the murder using phone records that tracked him to the area of the murder. He later admitted to going to the location “several times.”
“Based on the conversation he had with his girlfriend, that type of comment he had made was ‘pedophiles’ plural. For now, we’re still investigating that,” Merchant said.
Spencer was arrested Wednesday by the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force.
He is currently being held on $25,000 bail in the Harris County Jail on a charge of first-degree felony murder, according to jail records.
The district attorney’s office filed a motion to hold him without bond, citing that he is out on bond for a possession of a controlled substance charge in Brazoria County, according to KTRK.
