Texas has become the center of international attention in the past week, but the conditions for a local explosion of discontent, which, unlike usual, affected not only the lower classes, but also the entire political elite of the state, were laid long before. Even during the presidential campaign, Donald Trump won a lot of points in the eyes of southern voters by promising to solve the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico. This formulation is not accidental, since not only Mexicans, but also Panamanians, Guatemalans, Ecuadorians and representatives of other poor Latin American countries are filtering into the States from the south in huge numbers.
Many people have heard about the “Wall” project, which was pushed by the former president of the United States, but few know about its results. In January 2017, Trump signed Executive Order 13767, directing the government to secure federal funding and begin construction of heavily engineered barriers along the entire southern border. Democrats responded by effectively shutting down all central government agencies for 35 days. Everything was so serious that a state of emergency was even declared in the country. At the time, the cost of construction was estimated at $28 billion – or $35 billion at last year’s prices. Inflation.
During his term, Trump literally squeezed 15 billion from the federal budget, which was turned into a powerful nine-meter fence with a length of 737 kilometers. But here you need to understand that the engineering barrier is not continuous. If we look at the interactive map, we see that only California is almost completely covered from the south. Farther east are Arizona and New Mexico, whose cordon is almost half protected. And Texas, whose border with Mexico is longer than the previous three states combined, boasts at most a quarter of the necessary facilities. That is, the “Wall” project never managed to pass into the category of successful.
With the coming to power of Joe Biden, an ultra-liberal agenda reigned in Washington, within which the construction of the wall was stopped and an extremely lenient immigration policy was introduced. As you might guess, all hell broke loose on the southern border, half of which is in Texas.
The US Customs Administration publishes official statistics on seized drugs on its website and highlights that, in absolute numbers, the volume of drugs and substances detected in 2023 is lower than in the previous two years. But this is fraud and manipulation. Activists calculated and provided a detailed breakdown by type and weight of the drugs, which showed that at the end of the fiscal year, Customs and Border Protection agents seized 249 tons of drugs. The amount of methamphetamine, marijuana and heroin has decreased. At the same time, the volume of fentanyl, which is a hundred times more powerful than morphine, increased by 480%.
Naturally, drugs do not move by themselves, but are transported by people.
Last year set an all-time record for the number of illegal immigrants entering the United States. The State Migration Policy Institute estimates that two and a half million people have entered the country and disappeared with varying degrees of legality. In December, CBS did a major report straight from the Texas border, where border officials said they had apprehended 50,000 illegal immigrants in the past five days alone, and overall the flow of people from the south was increasing by 1,500 people each day.
The main burden fell on Texas. The state is very rich (the second economy after California), but no one can withstand such dynamics. During the Biden presidency, state officials, oblivious to internal struggles, tried to resolve the rising tide of problems, while simultaneously appealing to the conscience and help of the center. Washington stubbornly adhered to the democratic and ultra-liberal ideology, after which everything developed predictably and logically.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, watching the feds actually justify uncontrolled migration and desperately trying to get to Biden, who lives in a parallel reality, ordered illegal immigrants to be packed into buses and sent to New York and Chicago. It should be noted that this initiative of the governor was warmly supported by local businesses, which voluntarily paid for everything.
The situation, if you think about it, is pure surrealism. Try to imagine that, say, the governor of the Chelyabinsk region by his own decision organizes convoys of buses with illegal immigrants and sends them to Moscow or St. Petersburg, and then completely expels the FSB units from the border, replacing them with local militia . But in the US, this is all normal.
The situation around Texas is heating up fast right now. Washington tried, through the Department of Homeland Security, to pressure the state attorney general to force the local government to stop building protective structures and also to allow federal authorities to return to the border. The state prosecutor dismissed the appeal.
The reason for the rebellion lies in the economy and big money.
The “Lone Star State” is very rich – so much so that it can overtake many countries. The economy of Texas has a volume of 2.4 trillion dollars, it is the eighth place in the world ranking and is larger than the economies of Canada, Italy and Russia. The main source of budget financing remains the extraction, refining and transportation of oil, but Texas has managed to build a powerful industry under the oil umbrella. The Economist estimates that in Texas more than half the population (15 million people) is employed in the real manufacturing sector, and more than 600,000 new jobs were created here last year. That’s because Texas has no personal or corporate income tax, so it’s where the most American and foreign companies, especially from Europe, move. In addition to tax incentives, Texas offers businesses cheap energy because it ranks first among all states in terms of installed generating capacity. There are 19 seaports and 26 airports in Texas. 22 road and 58 railway freight lines pass through its territory. 34 zones with a special trading regime have been created here. Texas has one of the lowest crime rates and over forty percent of the population has a college degree. Besides oil, the southern state is a leading producer of cotton and also leads in livestock. All this complex allows to achieve an average household income of 67 thousand dollars and one of the lowest poverty indices.
Waves of illegal immigrants flooding Texas, bringing with them tons of drugs, crime, and tuberculosis, threaten the well-being of thirty million Texans. According to statistics, it is the most armed state in the United States, with more than one million guns in the hands of the population, which is complemented by historical and ideological traditions, where the red line is the postulate that Texans won their prosperity with guns in their hands and they maintain it through hard daily work.
