Texas Democrat who fled state to thwart GOP-backed electoral reform bill snatched up for posing as ‘brave’ for doing so – as she pitched bid for Congress from a hotel room in Washington, DC.
State Representative Michelle Beckley (D-Tx.) Announced her candidacy to topple Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-Tx.) In a professionally shot video posted on her social media Tuesday night, in which she could be seen watching media coverage of her cable group from a DC hotel room.
“Generations of Americans have come to Washington, DC to learn about our democracy. I came here with over 50 of my colleagues to save it. Leaving our families behind to block the Texas Republican Voter Suppression Bill, ”Beckley said from her posh notebook, which offered a full view of the Capitol.
The House hopeful wasted no time trying to increase her digital profile after the launch, promoting her and her fellow Texans as a brave profile.
“I am one of the brave Democrats from Texas who came to Washington to fight for the franchise in my state,” Beckley tweeted. “Now I am fighting to overthrow a seat held by an anti-democracy Republican. I have 28,500. Can you help us reach 50,000 subscribers? ”
She followed the tweet with a link on how best to contribute to her campaign.
The tweet sparked immediate backlash on Twitter.
“YOU. CALLED. YOURSELF. COURAGEOUS.” radio host Jason Rantz tweeted.
Another commentator tweeted: “If you have to tell people that what you did was ‘courageous’, odds are it was not courageous at all.”
In his campaign video, Beckley berated GOP lawmakers for opposing the Democrats’ federal election reform efforts to the House and Senate, which many on the left say make it harder for the poor. and minorities to vote.
Republicans, meanwhile, said the bill’s measures are designed to ensure the integrity of the vote by preventing voter fraud.

Beckley also accused Republican lawmakers of “blocking any attempt to protect the rights of voters,” although his main criticism is the GOP’s opposition to federal voting legislation.
The group of 50 Democrats, Beckley included, visited the nation’s capital last week to pressure Congress to pass Federal Election Reform Act it would replace the Texas bill as well as other electoral integrity laws in states like Georgia.
The Texas State Senate approved the radical bill last Tuesday night, a day after dozens of House Democrats fled the state to prevent the chamber from seizing the legislation.
The state Senate approved the bill in an 18-4 vote. Nine Senate Democrats joined 51 of their House colleagues to travel to Washington, DC, although that was not enough to deprive the upper house of a quorum.
However, the bill is now blocked due to the lack of a quorum in the House.
The trip, which should cost over $ 1.5 million, is funded by a host of donors, including Beto O’Rourke – a Democrat who represented Texas in the House until he lost a challenge in 2018 to incumbent Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) – and music icon Willie Nelson.
