A school district in North Texas condemns the actions of students who allegedly awarded prizes to students of color in a Snapchat auction group post about the slave trade.

The Aldo Independent School District released a statement on Monday denouncing the actions of students at Daniel’s ninth grade campus who “bully and harass other students because of their race.”

The name of the group post has changed several times, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported, using racial slurs in the name in many cases.

In the group post, a college student said a college student was worth a dollar and the price “would be better if his hair wasn’t that bad,” according to a photo from the group chat shared with USA TODAY. The group’s post also contained emoticons with a policeman pointing his gun at a black farmer.

Parker County NAACP Chairman Eddie Burnett did not speak to the students who were bullied in the group’s post, but said he could imagine the pain and embarrassment of suffering from similar things in a time when social media didn’t exist.

“It’s something that breaks you mentally and emotionally,” Burnett said. “It makes you wonder if something is really wrong with you. “

Burnett said he spoke to current and former high school students and believed this incident was not a one-time situation.

“When you interact with students of color and start calling them names, it’s part of dehumanizing that person,” Burnett said.

Aledo, Texas is about 20 miles from Fort Worth and is predominantly white. Of the 413 graduates in 2018-19 from the ninth-grade Daniel campus, only 7 were black – 347 graduates were white and 45 were Hispanic.

“Can you imagine what it is like for someone to put a price on your head?” local activist Tony Crawford told the Star-Telelgram. “I can’t imagine the embarrassment and pain that people you might be friends with are having this conversation. “

The district learned of the incident more than two weeks ago and launched an investigation that included law enforcement. The district spoke to the affected students and their parents and “assigned disciplinary action in accordance with our policy and the code of student conduct.”

A representative from Aldo ISD said the district could not release details of the consequences due to student protection. According to the school’s student manual, a student found in violation of the bullying policy will face “disciplinary action” and could be transferred to another class on campus.

“We ask our parents and the community to continue having important conversations with their children at home about racism and other forms of bullying as we all work together as a community to support our Bearcats,” a concluded the Aldo ISD press release.
