Houston Texans (0-2) – Baltimore Ravens (2-0) : 16-33
Despite the 17 point difference between these two teams, we could summarize this match in two actions. Two fourth attempts with 1 yard to go which were the key moments of this game. One on each side. The first is played by the Texans. While Houston is only led by three points, Bill O’Brien decides to play a 4th and 1 from his own 30 yards. Deshaun Watson (25/36, 275 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT) and the attack does not convert and allows the Ravens to be in an ideal position to register their first touchdown of the game.
The second takes place in the last quarter. This time, it’s Baltimore who decides to play a 4th and 1. There is no more than 12 minutes to play, the Texans have returned to 10 points (13-23) and are resisting well in defense. By recovering the ball, they could even put pressure on the premises. Except that Mark Ingram (9 races, 55 yards and 1 TD) has other projects in mind. The running back is not satisfied with this small yard, he covers 30 of them to reach the end-zone and put the Ravens permanently safe. Two fourth attempts, two different scenarios and finally a comfortable victory for the teammates of Lamar Jackson (18/24, 204 yards, 1 TD + 16 races, 54 yards).
Active cornerbacks
Still, until this bad decision from Houston, the Texans are holding up well. No touchdown is scored in the first quarter which boils down to a story of kicking. Three punts first, then three points by the boot of a Justin Tucker always so well regulated (3-0). But by leaving the ball to the Ravens 34 yards from his own line, we expose ourselves to danger.
Lamar Jackson finds Patrick Ricard on 1 yard (0-10) and the machine is launched. In the process, Deshaun Watson responds tit for tat with a pass of 10 yards for Darren Fells (7-10). But the defense puts too much pressure on the quarterback (4 sacks and 13 QB Hits) and on the opposing offensive squad which has a series of errors. Result, Marcus Peters made a superb interception, while the other cornerback, Marlon Humphrey, caused a fumble that LJ Ford brought to the end-zone (7-20).
The rest is only an exchange of field goals until this famous race of Mark Ingram to confirm the result (30-16). The Ravens have once again proven that with a Lamar Jackson and a defense at this level, they have few competitors in this AFC conference. The only ones who may be able to get in their way to the Super Bowl are certainly Kansas City. That’s good, it’s the poster for the next Monday Night Football.
