A 22-year-old North Texas man was arrested on federal charges after authorities documented his own presence in the violent assault on the Capitol earlier this month and posted photos and video on multiple social media accounts, The Dallas Morning News reported.
Nolan Bernard Cooke faces charges of acting in a disturbance of civil order, illegal activities on the Capitol and entering or staying in buildings or restricted premises, and disturbance of public order in or near buildings or restricted premises, the Texas newspaper said.
Cooke is at least the fifth North Texas resident arrested in connection with the insurrection in Washington.
An FBI agent wrote in an affidavit that authorities began investigating Cooke after receiving at least three complaints that he had participated in the January 6 riots.
The whistleblowers said Cooke had filmed the incident with a GoPro camera around his neck and posted video and photos on Snapchat, the FBI document said.
Among those images were photographs in which he claimed to have been pepper sprayed and where Cooke reacts to newscast images that appear to show him inside the Capitol, according to authorities.
The FBI agent said that in a video posted to Cooke’s account on TikTok you can see people pushing their way past police officers outside the Capitol.
The person holding the camera is wearing a denim jacket or shirt and has long brown hair, and is caught holding and interfering with a police officer during the incident.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Cooke’s Savoy home, located about 15 miles east of Sherman.
Two photos on Cooke’s Instagram account show a young man with shoulder-length brown hair and a denim jacket or shirt standing outside the Capitol.
One has a caption in which Cooke addresses his girlfriend: “I would not want anyone other than you here with me to make the revolution”, accompanied by heart emojis and kisses.
The caption for the other says: “What a (expletive) crazy day.”
According to the affidavit, Cooke agreed to speak with authorities during the search operation.
He said that he had gone to Washington, DC because he wanted to be heard and that he had traveled there in his vehicle with his girlfriend and a relative.
He added that he carried firearms but left them in the vehicle when the relative left him and his girlfriend at the Capitol.
Cooke admitted to authorities that he was the person who appears in the images on social media, that he had pushed his way through the police to get to the doors of the Capitol and that he hit a window with a flagpole, but denied entering. to the enclosure.
Nolan Cooke only denied entering the Capitol.
