MORELIA, Mich., May 30, 2023.- The Michoacán Ministry of Health (SSM) invites pregnant women to receive the tetanus vaccine, starting at 20 weeks of gestation, since it prevents transmission to the newborn born, and also protects against diphtheria and whooping cough.
In a statement it was reported that the scheme will depend on the doses that the patient already has, pregnant women with no history of tetanus vaccination should receive three doses, the first the day they go to the health center, the second a month, and the third at 20 weeks. Previously vaccinated women receive a single dose in the left arm.
The biological is free, safe, without serious adverse reactions, and is available in the 364 health centers of the SSM, as well as in family medicine units of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and clinics of the Institute of Social Security and Services. of State Workers (ISSSTE), because this vaccine is part of the Universal Vaccination Program.
If a pregnant woman is not immunized, the newborn can contract neonatal tetanus, a bacterial infection that can cause muscle spasms, jaw cramps, inability to open the mouth, seizures, fever and sweating, which can be life-threatening.
Diphtheria is another disease to which the baby is exposed, this usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, which, if not treated in time, can cause damage to the nervous system and death. Both diseases are preventable, hence the importance of getting vaccinated after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
