Technology company Tet, in cooperation with Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel fuel, will use Neste MY 100% renewable diesel fuel to power data center generators. Greener diesel fuel will ensure the operation of Tet DATTUM and DC6 data centers, significantly reducing one part of CO2 emissions. For the transition to the use of more environmentally friendly diesel fuel, Tet has so far invested around 20,000 euros, purchasing the first six tons of fuel.
In the information and communication technology sector, data centers are among the largest consumers of electricity, as they use approximately 3% of the total global electricity consumption, but by 2030 they could consume as much as 4%. The company invests EUR 300,000 every year to improve the energy efficiency of data centers.
“We have been working for a long time to improve the efficiency of data center capacity utilization and to offer customers more competitive services. This year, we have started to implement the “green course”, which is connected with the transition to low-emission data centers. As part of this course, we are starting the transition to more environmentally friendly fuel for the first two data centers, which will reduce the amount of CO₂ emissions that occur as a result of operating generators,” emphasizes Tet Data Centers Business Development Manager Māris Sperga. “The use of renewable diesel fuel in data centers will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the use of backup generators by an average of 90%.”
“We are really pleased that the leading data center operator in the Baltics has added to our group of sustainability partners. Joining the sustainability partnership of the most influential and largest companies in Latvia clearly shapes the opinion of what a modern company should be. The implementation of sustainable solutions in the company’s operations must be not only a matter of environmental and social responsibility, but also a firm belief that is rooted in the company’s foundation. Tet’s purposeful approach to climate-neutral operations confirms that it is important not only to identify the company’s sustainability goals, but also to confidently move towards their achievement,” explains Armands Beiziķis, chairman of the board of SIAneste Latvija.
Neste MY is a 100% renewable diesel fuel with the same chemical composition as fossil diesel fuel, but does not contain a single drop of petroleum. It does not contain sulfur, oxygen, or aromatic chemical compounds. Crucially, it is fully suitable for all diesel engines, therefore no further adjustments are required – it can be used 100% pure or as an additive to fossil diesel fuel in any quantity. Thanks to a unique production technology, Neste MY renewable diesel fuel has excellent frost resistance parameters and long-term storage benefits.
Tet’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment is defined in the company’s Sustainability Policy, which envisages a gradual transition to renewable resources for self-consumption as the company’s main decarbonization strategy.
