Tet Achieves Sustainability Goals in 2023: Renewable Electricity, Public Education, and Equipment Reuse

Technology company “Tet” has achieved the set sustainability goals in 2023 – the availability of the digital environment has been improved, both by expanding the optical Internet network and by implementing social initiatives for public education, the volume of electronic equipment waste has been reduced, work has been done on the transition to the use of renewable electricity for self-consumption, and also carried out other measures to promote the sustainability of the company.

“Since last year, in addition to financial and business goals, we have also set sustainability goals for the company, which play an important role in evaluating the achievements of “Tet”. We see ourselves as a company that wants and is able to work in accordance with the expectations and challenges of the 21st century society and is able to be a partner that business clients and households can rely on not only in terms of efficient services, but also in terms of appropriate values. We are proud that the sustainability goals of 2023 have been achieved, and this year we have set an even higher bar in this area – we will continue to work on the transition to the use of renewable electricity, educate the public about the digital environment, and make other improvements to make the company’s operations more and more sustainable,” states Chairman of the board of “Tet” Uldis Tatarčuks.

For 2024, the company has set several additional sustainability goals that contribute to strengthening environmental, social and management aspects in business processes, models and strategy. All relevant information about the company’s ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance is gathered in the annual sustainability report, which will be published in the 2nd quarter of 2024.

Towards the use of 100% renewable electricity for self-consumption

Gradually moving towards the 2030 goal of switching to 100% use of renewable electricity for the provision of “Tet” services and other self-consumption, in 2024 “Tet” will ensure that approximately 15% of renewable energy is used for its own consumption. In addition, this electricity is of Latvian origin, thus “Tet” makes its contribution to promoting the development of renewable energy in Latvia. In cooperation with the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel fuel, “Neste”, Tet has been using renewable diesel fuel to power data center generators since the end of 2023. More environmentally friendly diesel fuel ensures the operation of two data centers of “Tet”, significantly reducing one part of CO2 emissions.

Public education – from a children’s program to a cyber security conference

A society educated about digital risks is one of the prerequisites for successful development of the country, therefore “Tet” improves the accessibility of the digital environment not only by expanding the optical Internet network (which is the most energy-saving way to provide the Internet), but also by implementing social initiatives to educate various community groups on digital security and technology opportunities.

The most important projects in public education about digital security and digital inclusion activities:

  • the initiative for the preschool audience, their parents and teachers “Tet school for children”, which was created in cooperation with the Center for a Safer Internet;
  • activities to improve cyber hygiene skills for both companies and individuals, including the cyber security forum “CyberShield”;
  • in cooperation with the Riga Business School, the entry of Harvard University content into Latvia was realized in order to strengthen the digital competence of students and teachers, as well as other events were organized for informatics teachers and students;
  • support and mentoring in Riga TechGirls trainings “Get to know the technologies”, which promotes the inclusion of women in the technology sector and develops their digital skills.

More than 33 thousand people participated in these and other educational activities of “Tet” in 2023, thus reaching the goal set by the company. Of these, 12,000 are viewers of the show “Richies Roe and the Internet” created by Tet schools for children.

Equipment is reused to reduce electrical waste

Technology companies directly and indirectly generate a significant amount of electronic equipment waste, therefore “Tet” takes care that the equipment required for the use of basic services will last a full working life. In 2023, when installing new basic Tet services, 64% of the time it was done with reused equipment such as modems, routers and TV equipment. Tet implements various other initiatives to reduce equipment waste, for example, when a customer buys new equipment in an online store, the old one is taken away for free. Circular economy in general is also one of the essential aspects of “Tet” Sustainability Policy.
