This week, Samsung introduced the new generation of folding Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5
Both models boast resistance to water penetration
In the article, we will tell you why they are not yet resistant to the ingress of dust
Tech giant Samsung has released a new video showing how it tests the latest generation of flexible phones. The video comes directly from the factory in the South Korean city of Gumi, which I also had the opportunity to visit this Thursday and see how such production, testing and assembly take place. And believe me, it was a really great experience that made my tech-enthusiast heart skip a beat. I will share my impressions of the factory visit with you in a separate article that I am preparing for next week.
200,000 bends and a fall on hard ground
In the published video you will see the whole series of tests. The first is bending, for which Samsung (as with previous generations) guarantees 200,000 bends at a room temperature of 25 °C. Next comes a lighter drop test in a rotating chamber, the IPX8 water resistance test, in which the manufacturer guarantees that the phone can withstand a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes without anything happening to it.
This is followed by testing resistance to splashing water according to the IPX4 standard, a test in an environment with different temperatures and a test of the S Pen (only for the Galaxy Z Fold 5). The last two tests focus on durability – the first captures the drop of the phone from a height of 90 cm onto a solid surface, the second a drop of a metal ball from a height of 40 cm onto a flexible display.
Why are they not resistant to dust ingress?
Even though Samsung jigsaws do not mind water, they are not resistant to the ingress of dust. It was speculated that we could expect dust resistance in this year’s models, but the manufacturer needs more time to implement this protection. Both the joint and the entire flexible mechanism must be adapted so that dust particles cannot penetrate through them, and Samsung engineers have not yet managed to solve this problem.
It is good to add here that neither the Flip 5 nor the Fold 5 have any certification of resistance to falling, and no one can even guarantee that the phone will not be damaged when dropped from a much lower height (it always depends on what surface, at what speed and also what part the device will fall), however, a series of tests shows that both models should hold something.
