Testimony from doctors in Africa who treat Mpox patients, This is how bad their situation is

Jakarta

The spike in cases of Mpox or ‘monkey pox’ is very worrying on the African continent. This situation led the World Health Organization (WHO) to give the status of an international health emergency, which was previously given to COVID-19 during the pandemic.

The rapid spread is associated with a new strain of the virus that causes Mpox, called Clade Ib. This strain of virus can spread quickly, especially through sexual activity.

Congo has reported 18 thousand cases of Mpox from both Clade I and Clade Ib. A total of 615 people have died in the Congo due to Mpox.

Meanwhile, there were about 222 confirmed cases of Clade Ib in four African countries last month. In addition to one case each in Sweden and Thailand with a history of travel to Africa.

Doctors in Nigeria reveal the current situation with the spread of Mpox in their country. He admitted that he was very worried to see that the mutation virus was happening faster than they feared.

“I am worried that in Africa we are working ‘blind’,” said an infectious disease specialist at the Niger Delta University Hospital, Dr. Dimie Ogoina, quoted by the Mirror, on Wednesday (28/8/2024).

Ogoina said that the virus was moving so fast that the medical team did not understand the disease well. This situation ultimately makes it more difficult to deal with transmission problems, severity and risk of disease.

“I’m worried because the virus seems to be moving and producing new strains,” he continued.

mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus. This infection can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever and muscle aches.

However, the most obvious symptom is a skin rash or pus-filled sores that last two to four weeks all over the body.
