At Tourcoing hospital in the North, there is currently only one intubated patient sedated. As a respite for caregivers after two months of fighting endlessly for the coronavirus, and facing death too often. “We have seen many patients who cried holding hands before we fell asleep, saying::It’s over, I won’t see my family anymore, I’m going to die. “ There are times when we cry in the hallways”, Says Juliette Halbaut, resuscitation nurse.
Arriving as reinforcements at the start of the health crisis, Mathilde Durang-Mastin, a nurse, had to absorb the frantic pace: “Everything happened very suddenly (…) and overnight we are also taken for heroes”, she says. In a guest book, the caregivers recorded their fight and their victories as well. At Tourcoing hospital, the Covid unit only takes up part of the resuscitation service.
