Many slang words, phrases, expressions and maxims have emerged from this or that military event. Let’s think about all the technological innovations that have required a new vocabulary. The social and linguistic mixing of soldiers on the front, which contributed in 14-18 to the decline of regional dialects. To the expressions, to the initials which were characteristic of the army but still remain used by all those mobilized once they return home.

Many terms and formulas have passed into everyday language: “hairy», «at the bar», «broken mouth“… Unsurprisingly, it was the Great War which gave rise to these emblematic slang words, invented or transformed by the poilus in an attempt to transcribe the realities of the front. But other formulas are less known. Do you know, for example, the surprising origin of the verb “sack»? Do you know what the poilus meant when they spoke of “sewing machine” or of “coffee grinder»? Initial “P.C.D.F.» are they those of “poor bastard from the front» or “infantry commander post»? Take the test to check your knowledge.
