Test: Teufel Stereo M – HiFi-Journal

Even if the idea of Teufel Stereo M Back in 2017, the streaming speakers with their 3-way system in a bookshelf speaker and the Raumfeld streaming platform are still very interesting and therefore reason enough to take a closer look at them in a detailed review. Have fun while reading!

The time had come at IFA 2017, Teufel and hers Raumfeld products were merged (we reported) and have been strolling under the Berlin Teufel logo since then, before Raumfeld products were still placed in their own range without a clear Teufel brand affiliation. These streaming products have also been running under the striking red Teufel logo since 2017. In addition to the Teufel Stereo M presented here, the lineup also includes the Stereo L, One S and One M. We had already taken a closer look at the latter (link to the test: One S and One M).

But let’s stay with the Stereo M, a bookshelf speaker which has a 3-way system as a special feature and thus represents a full-range speaker. The fact that the Stereo M are a little older in terms of technology is shown by the construction principle of the streaming loudspeakers. Teufel always delivers the Stereo M as a pair, as a master / slave system is used here, which means that there is an active loudspeaker with all the electronics, which feeds the second passive loudspeaker with power and audio signals via a cable. This saves costs, since the electronics only have to be installed once. After all, the 3-way streaming speaker system costs only 999 euros and is therefore the cheapest active system on the market. For comparison, one Nubert X-4000 RC is at a unit price of 895 euros. Or one ELAC Navis ARB-51 costs 999 euros each, which can then also communicate wirelessly with one another. You have to make a compromise and the high quality 5m cable supplied makes the system quite flexible.

Except for the no longer up-to-date active-passive system, the loudspeaker cannot be seen to have had to be saved somewhere. The processing of the solid MDF housing is impeccable. The matt varnish and the high-quality aluminum components exude a high level of quality as one would expect from hi-fi devices. Even the driver units have been fitted with a stylish decorative ring to hide the mounting screws. In addition, there are magnetically adhesive front grilles, which leave out the area of the lower control panel and allow the Stereo M to operate “incognito”, for example in the living room.

But even when it comes to the driver equipment, Teufel has given the compact bookshelf speaker a fully-fledged 3-way system, consisting of a coaxial driver with a 25mm fabric tweeter and a 135mm midrange driver with an aluminum hexacone sandwich membrane, which is also integrated in the popular passive Teufel Definion series is used. There is also a 150mm woofer for the bass range. These transducers are driven by a six-channel Class D power amplifier, which, as already mentioned, supplies both loudspeakers with power. On the connection side it is very clear, so only one cinch, Ethernet and USB input are available. Unfortunately, you won’t find any other inputs such as HDMI or Toslink. This clearly shows the orientation of the original Raumfeld products, they were designed purely for streaming and that is how the Stereo Ms are equipped. If you need more playback options, you have to use optional devices such as the Devil streamer To fall back on.

Wireless WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 are also included. The latter also enables broad access to streaming services. The Raumfeld app understands how to use Spotify, TuneIN, Soundcloud, Napster and TIDAL from home; all other streaming services then have to be via a smart player. Thanks to Spotify Connect, the speakers also appear automatically in the streaming app. No remote control is included for the control, here too the focus is on smart operation and so you can use the stylish aluminum control panel of the master speaker directly Adjust the volume, as well as skip between the tracks or store three presets with, for example, your favorite Internet radio station. The rest then has to be done via the Raumfeld app and now I get to the practical and acoustic part.
