Test society? From ‘disproportionate’ to ‘finally freedom again’

Test first and then to Keukenhof, the casino or a sports match: it is currently still part of a pilot, but at some point it must become part of society, if it is up to the government.

The so-called test society should make life more normal again during the corona pandemic. While most people support the proposal for such a society, there is also a relatively large group that does not like testing and vaccination for access to events and catering.

‘Increase or enforce support’

“If you want a test society, you have to see whether people want it. If that is not the case, you must either try to increase support or enforce it,” says Arjen Boin, professor of public institutions and public administration. Leiden University.

Boin, who specializes in crisis management, has doubts about the plan. “The idea that you can redesign a society and that everyone can participate in it: the question is whether that will work. Just as it is difficult to get everyone on board when enforcing the restrictive measures and vaccinating.”

About a third of the Dutch, like Boin, question a test society. Studies by RIVM, I&O Research and TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam show that between 18 and 34 percent of the respondents are against a test society or a corona passport.

According to it Heart of the Netherlandspanel is also three quarters of the Dutch against a personal contribution of (maximum) 7.50 euros per test certificate, as the cabinet proposes.
