In the first days of the Blu-ray disc, Sony still had to compete with Microsoft, which came up with the so-called HD-DVD. It didn’t take long for Sony’s disc format to win the race and now even Microsoft’s new console – the Xbox Series X – has a Blu-ray drive in the unit.
That of course makes it interesting to know which console has the better Blu-ray drive, a test provided by the YouTube channel HDTVTest has been extensively addressed. The conclusion – given Sony’s longer expertise with the format – may not come as a huge surprise, but the drive in the PlayStation 5 comes out on top in the test.
For example, the drive of the Xbox Series X wants to skip frames here and there when you skip through scenes, and the console from Microsoft does not go beyond 10bit RGB. Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation 5 offers full 12bit YCbCr 4: 4: 4 color format output, which is a significant improvement.
