Test session – The assumed gigantism of the MateView GT

The product is titanic: there is not really another adjective to describe the MateView GT, a screen intended for gamers which will be launched by Huawei in early 2022. Said screen also provides an excellent experience. viewing, whether for games or videos, but some secondary aspects still raise eyebrows.

The Chinese giant’s first foray into gaming screens, the MateView GT spans an impressive 34-inch diagonal, all presented in the form of a slightly curved screen, as any good should. ultrawide, or rather ultralarge in our language of Molière. Indeed, if it is commonplace, when it comes to office work, or simply maximizing productivity, to equip yourself with a second screen, here, the idea is to make maximum use of the space offered on a screen. Games that actually use two screens are extremely rare after all, while the opposite is true for ultra-wide screens.

So, launch any newer first-person shooter game, and you will be treated to a new experience, with a greatly increased field of view, even compared to a 27-inch screen, like the one usually uses this reporter. Better yet, the curved aspect of the screen creates a “wraparound” effect, which in part replicates the true human field of vision. We don’t see the objects and places around us in a fixed, flat plane, after all, and that curvature gives the fascinating feeling of “progressing” in a game.

Of course, to take full advantage of the features of the MateView GT, you have to use the right kind of games, that is to say shooting games, as previously mentioned, adventure games, racing games … In short, any game in the first person. In fact, to dive back into Elite: Dangerous with a larger and curved screen is gradually approaching the experience that one could live in virtual reality … without the heartaches and the astronomical expenses for this specialized equipment.

And when it comes time to watch movies, that’s just as good. When the format allows (YouTube videos seem strangely unable to exceed a certain resolution, which is lower than the screen’s capabilities), the user will almost think they are in the cinema.

All this is very appreciable – and appreciated – without forgetting the refresh rate of 165 Hz, well above the 60 frames per second generally recommended for a “fluid” experience on the screen.

A few small irritants

Where the eyebrows arise is when you turn to the soundbar built into the display stand. While it is very good that Huawei has thought of adding a way to “output” the sound of a game displayed on the screen, for example, the sound quality leaves much to be desired, the low frequencies being largely damped, or even outright. absent on certain occasions. We say to ourselves that it is better to stick to your headphones, which can also be plugged into a standard audio output located at the back of the screen.

Some peculiarities should also be noted, although they do not cause inconvenience as such: the screen fortunately has a mode of limited emission of blue light, which is harmful for the premises, since the third-party software used to reducing the intensity of the lighting, like f.lux, or even the mechanism built into Windows, will work poorly on the MateView GT and will result in a particularly darkened image with the reddish tint.

Likewise, Huawei engineers have sought to present a screen with the thinnest frame possible; no one is against virtue, but this ensures that everything necessary for the transformation of the electrical signal is on the side of the plug that plugs into the electrical outlet. No problem if our tension bar has plugs aligned the “right way”, and there is no shortage of vertical space, but otherwise it could cause a headache.

All of this put together, is it enough to deprive yourself of the pleasure of using the MateView GT? Not at all: of course, people who mainly want to do office work will find something to do with it, but for those, Huawei also offers the MateView, which is precisely intended for the professional environment.

No, for $ 750, the MateView GT is a very high quality screen, which we will love to adopt.
